Time-of-use rates: worth switching?

Cheaper electricity at some hours, more expensive at others.

5 min read

Some utilities charge different prices depending on the time of day. If you can move laundry, dishwashing and car charging to cheaper hours, a time-of-use plan can save money. If you can't, it can cost more.

Ask your utility

  • What are the peak hours and prices?
  • What are the off-peak prices?
  • Can you show me what my bill would have been last year on this plan?
  • Can I switch back if it doesn't work for us?

It suits households that

  • Are out during weekday afternoons and early evenings
  • Can run the dishwasher and laundry late or early
  • Charge an electric car overnight
