Hi there,
This month's step: set the thermostat schedule
Heating is the biggest part of many winter bills, and the cheapest fix is a schedule. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, take ten minutes to set it:
- Around 68°F while you're awake and at home.
- Several degrees lower while you're asleep and while the house is empty.
- Warm-up starting about half an hour before you wake or get home.
The US Department of Energy estimates you can save up to about 10% a year by turning the thermostat back 7 to 10°F for 8 hours a day. More in Thermostat settings that save money.
The change that costs nothing
Check the filter in your furnace or air handler. If it looks gray and dusty, replace it. A clogged filter makes the system work harder for the same warmth.
Reader question
"A man at my door says I can save money by switching my electricity supplier. Should I?" Never decide on the doorstep, and never hand over your account number. Ask for the offer in writing, then check whether the rate is fixed, how long it lasts and whether there's a cancellation fee. See Energy supplier offers.
