Thermostat settings that save money
A few degrees, at the right times, makes the biggest difference.
Heating and cooling are usually the largest part of a home energy bill. Adjusting the thermostat while you're asleep or away is the simplest way to lower it.
Starting points
- Winter: around 68°F while you're awake at home, and lower while you're asleep or away
- Summer: around 78°F while you're home, and higher while you're away
- The US Department of Energy estimates you can save up to about 10% a year by turning the thermostat back 7 to 10°F for 8 hours a day
Make it automatic
- Use the schedule on a programmable or smart thermostat
- Set it once for weekdays and weekends
- Heat pumps work best with small setbacks; check the manual
Comfort without the bill
- Ceiling fans let you raise the cooling setting a few degrees; turn them off when you leave the room
- Close curtains on hot afternoons and open them to winter sun
- Wear layers indoors in winter
