- Check the filter monthly and replace or clean it when it looks dirty, typically every one to three months
- Keep vents and returns clear of furniture and rugs
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and plants

Many manufacturers recommend a yearly professional check: before cooling season for air conditioners and before heating season for furnaces. Some utilities offer discounted tune-ups.
