Guides / Heating and cooling
Stay cool for less in summer
Block the sun, move the air, and cool the room you're in.
Air conditioning can double summer bills. Keeping heat out in the first place means the AC runs less.
Keep heat out
- Close blinds and curtains on sunny windows
- Avoid using the oven on hot afternoons; cook outside, use a microwave or slow cooker
- Run the dryer and dishwasher in the evening
Move air
- Ceiling fans on counterclockwise in summer
- Open windows on cool nights and close them in the morning
- Use a window AC for the room you're in instead of cooling the whole house, if that suits your home
Stay safe
In extreme heat, staying cool matters more than the bill. Many cities open cooling centers, and some utilities offer summer assistance.
