Energy supplier offers: read before you switch
In some states you can choose a supplier. Check the fine print.
In some states, you can buy electricity or gas from a company other than your utility. Some offers save money; others start low and rise sharply. Knowing what to check protects you.
Check every offer
- Is the rate fixed or variable?
- How long does the rate last, and what happens after?
- Is there a monthly fee or an early cancellation fee?
- How does the rate compare with your utility's default "price to compare"?
Red flags
- Door-to-door or phone sellers asking for your account number on the spot
- Pressure to decide today
- Anyone claiming to be from your utility who wants payment by gift card or wire
- Promises of savings with no rate in writing
Where to compare
Many states with supplier choice have an official comparison website run by the state utility commission.
