Help paying utility bills

LIHEAP, weatherization, payment plans and utility programs.

5 min read

If utility bills are hard to pay, help exists. The sooner you ask, the more options you usually have.

Programs to ask about

  • LIHEAP, the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, run by states, which can help with heating and cooling bills
  • The Weatherization Assistance Program, which can make homes more efficient at no cost for eligible households
  • Utility discount rates and hardship programs
  • Payment plans that spread out past-due amounts

Steps

  1. Call your utility before a bill is overdue, if you can, and ask about payment plans and programs
  2. Call or text 211 to find local energy assistance
  3. Ask about rules that protect against shutoffs in extreme weather or for medical needs in your state
