Laundry and dishwashing for less
Cold water, full loads and a clean lint filter.
Washers, dryers and dishwashers run several times a week. Small changes in how you use them save energy and water every time.
Laundry
- Wash in cold water; most of a washer's energy goes to heating water
- Run full loads
- Clean the dryer lint filter every load, and have the vent cleaned regularly; a clogged vent wastes energy and is a fire risk
- Use the moisture sensor setting, or air-dry when you can
Dishes
- A full, efficient dishwasher usually uses less water than washing by hand
- Scrape instead of pre-rinsing
- Skip heated dry and let dishes air-dry
