Lower your water bill

Find leaks first, then fit simple fixtures.

5 min read

Leaks are the hidden cost in many water bills. A running toilet alone can waste a surprising amount of water every day.

Check for leaks

  1. Turn off every tap and appliance, note the water meter reading, and check again two hours later without using water
  2. Put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank; if color appears in the bowl within 15 minutes without flushing, the flapper is leaking
  3. Look under sinks and around the water heater

Simple upgrades

  • WaterSense-labeled showerheads and faucet aerators
  • A new toilet flapper (an inexpensive part)
  • Water the yard early in the morning, and only when it needs it
  • Run the dishwasher and washer with full loads

Ask your water utility

Many offer free leak checks, rebates on efficient fixtures, or a one-time adjustment for a leak you've fixed.
