Turn down the water heater (safely)

120°F is enough for most homes, and saves energy.

4 min read

Water heating is often the second-largest energy use in a home. Many water heaters come set hotter than needed.

Check the setting

  • The US Department of Energy suggests 120°F for most households
  • A lower setting also reduces the risk of scalding
  • If someone in the home has a weakened immune system, ask a doctor about the right setting

Other savings

  • Fix dripping hot water taps
  • Install low-flow showerheads
  • Wash clothes in cold water
  • Insulate the first few feet of hot water pipe if they're easy to reach

Safety

On gas water heaters, leave the burner area and venting alone. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility from outside.
